Day One: Petite Puppets

Task: Support Operation Christmas Child by making and decorating finger puppets and felt animals as items to be included in the Samaritan’s Purse gift boxes.

The students in the Petite Puppets service group are making puppets to put in the Operation Christmas child boxes.

To make the puppets they first get some felt and outline the picture using a template. After cutting out the shapes they sew all of the pieces together using different stitching techniques.  Then the decorations such as googly eyes are attached with glue.

There are five students in this group and they chose this activity because they could relax and enjoy being creative and stitching the puppets.  They also wanted to make different designs and things for kids. Some students had never sewn before and wanted to try something new.

“It’s just nice to let other kids have something they don’t particularly need but might want” – Dawson Skinner

It is calming to sit down inside with the air conditioning and draw and sew the puppets whilst with your friends. You can also talk with the other people around you and sing along to the music.

To see what it was like we put one of our members from Stop The Press in with the group. Going in the only thing she thought was “I don’t want to stab my finger with a needle because that might hurt”. She found it to be easier than she initially thought but still challenging. She found that she was proud of her work and was happy it was going to good cause.  She said, “Someone who has nothing now has something”. What she liked best was the finished product.
